Tornado Alley, an all-original Americana band featuring Vinny Crici, Sonny Speed, Tim Huss, Robert Langley and Lora Kendall , will be performing at Bellmore Memorial Public Library, 2288 Bedford Ave.

Island Songwriters Showcase members Sonny Speed, Tim Huss and Vincent Crici, three singer-songwriters with very distinct musical personalities, decided to join forces with percussionist Robert Langley and form Tornado Alley. As their distinctive styles merged into a unified sound, an experiment in original American roots music was born.

The members of Tornado Alley challenge themselves to write all original material that reflects the many genres of roots music: bluegrass, country, gospel, traditional blues and folk idioms found in California, New England and the Texas plains. A signature of Tornado Alley’s sound is their emphasis of three- and four-part harmonies, coupled with up-tempo energy and universal appeal. The Tornado Alley line-up is also adept at seamlessly switching instruments and roles: Vincent Crici on vocals, guitar, bass and mandolin; Tim Huss on vocals, guitar and bass; Robert Langley on percussion and backing vocals; Sonny Speed on vocals, guitar, mandolin bass, harmonica and melodica. Tornado Alley has just finished recording its first CD and will release it very soon.

Sunday, 11/12 – John Wesley Harding. 2 PM.  University Café, Stony Brook.  An absolutely unique performer who pushes the boundaries of the singer-songwriter, with influences from traditional songs to those of Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, Bruce Springsteen, and of course Dylan.
A British singer-songwriter who has explored traditional folk (with the songs of Nic Jones and others), performed with Bruce Springsteen, worked with Elvis Costello’s backing band The Attractions, and pioneered a genre he called “gangsta folk.” And he is also an acclaimed novelist, with his recent book “Misfortune.”  He is absolutely unique and it promises to be quite an afternoon. Red House recording artist Cliff Eberhardt knew by age seven that he was going to be a singer and songwriter. As a child Cliff taught himself to play guitar, piano, base and drums. In his teens Eberhardt was fortunate enough to live close to the Main Point (one of the best folk clubs on the East Coast), he cut his teeth listening to the likes of James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Bruce Springsteen, Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Bonnie Raitt, and Mississippi John Hurt – receiving an early and impressive tutorial in acoustic music. At the same time, he was also listening to great pop songwriters like Cole Porter, the Gershwins, and Rodgers and Hart, which explain his penchant for great melodies and clever lyrical twists.

Sunday, 12/3 – Antje Duvekot & Anais Mitchell (co-bill). 2 PM.  University Café, Stony Brook.  Two of today’s finest young singer-songwriters, both Kerrville New Folk winners, share the University Café stage for an afternoon of original songs.

Antje Duvekot, a Café favorite brought to our attention by Ellis Paul, returns fresh from a Newport Folk Festival appearance with a fine new CD, Big Dream Boulevard.  Antje Duvekot returns for her third Café visit. Originally from Heidelberg, Germany, Antje emigrated to the US as a teenager, and explored the folk world of urban songwriters like Ellis Paul, John Gorka, and Ani DiFranco. Her songs caught Seamus Egan’s ear, who recorded several of them with his band, Solas. Egan produced Antje’s stunning studio debut, Big Dream Boulevard . A recent Boston New Folk award helps confirm Ellis Paul’s prediction that “she’s going to be the next great American folk singer-songwriter.”

Anais Mitchell’s songs range from personal to political, consistently poetic and intelligent, with echoes of Ani DiFranco, Sandy Denny, and Joni Mitchell.  Anais Mitchell is true to the legacy of her namesakes —- French author/diarist Anais Nin and singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell. A Vermont childhood followed by college, travel and embrace of a performing career, led to Kerrville honors and the release of a highly-acclaimed CD, Hymns for the Exiled. While she is often compared to Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen in her lyrics, and Ani DiFranco and  Sandy Denny  in her performance style, Mitchell is best described simply as an original.

Both performers made their mark at the Kerrville Folk Festival with New Folk awards in recent years and have gone on to record impressive CDs.   Admission to this show is $20.00 with a student ticket of $15.00. We need to submit  VCR/VHS or Mini-DV tapes to Cablevision Woodbury to be televised each week during these half hour time slots—– Our intention is to present video recordings of local musicians who would like to have their music aired on cable TV as a public service and for additional exposure of their music, as part of the program material that we will be presenting.

It is the music of our local musicians that helps us to cope with, balance out and reduce the stress in our daily lives. Their music can soothe, stimulate, tranquilize, energize, empathize, motivate, celebrate……..Whatever our individual needs are, we can always appreciate and enjoy the fine and diverse talents of our local musicians on Long Island .

Our program agenda will also include events and activities that occur on Long Island that promote a healthy socio-multicultural environment.  We welcome local musicians who find the premise of our shows appealing to provide us with a tape of their music for public viewing.
