Is Your House Calling for a Check-up?

Dear Friend of Renewable Energy:

I wanted to tell you about some pretty interesting (and free!) events that we have coming up that might help you save some money if you are a Long Island homeowner with high utility and heating bills.

But first, I have to tell you about my recent doctor’s visit.

A couple of weeks ago, I figured that it was probably a good idea for my house to have a general check up with the doctor. My ‘energy efficiency doctor’ made a house visit, also known as a Comprehensive Home Assessment as part of a program called Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® . And frankly, I was amazed to see what his very thorough and comprehensive tests revealed.

These ‘house doctors’ are specially trained and Building Performance Institute (BPI) accredited technicians, and they use sophisticated diagnostic tools, such as a blower door, an infrared camera, and smoke candles, to check a house from basement to attic.

In my case, they found that even though my house is quite well insulated and energy efficient, there is still room for improvement. I need to have some weather stripping done to minimize air leakage, install mechanical ventilation, and get a small gas leak fixed (yes, they test for safety hazards such as carbon monoxide and gas leaks). Not exactly quadruple bypass, but I’m glad I had it all checked.

LIPA now provides cash incentives to homeowners that choose to get recommended efficiency upgrades done and most BPI contractors will also credit the cost of the Comprehensive Home Assessment which could run you between $200 and $500.

So, if you are interested in learning how you can save energy and money (as much as 40 percent on your utility bills!) as well as help the environment through this Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® , you may want to check out the live demonstrations at our seven Home Performance demo sites as part of our Solar Tour, October 6, or attend a free evening seminar about the Home Performance program.

Our self-guided Solar Tour is Saturday, October 6, 2007 from 10 am to 4 pm. More info and FREE Visitor’s Passes are available on our website at http://www.renewableenergylongisland.org/visitorfaqs.cfm
