Who do Greens in New York want for President?

On July 13, 2008, in Chicago, Illinois, delegates from throughout New York – including a few from Suffolk County – will help to nominate a Green Party Presidential Candidate.

The Green Party of New York State (GPNYS) undertook a worthwhile (though, expensive) project in grassroots participation. Due to the fact that in New York, the Green Party does not have ballot status, the Green Party was not able to use the usual, primary-through-the-BOE method to choose the delegates to the national party’s presidential convention.

Instead, various counties and regions used mail in balloting and face-to-face meetings to collect the preference of greens all over New York. The results are below (at “keep reading”)

Please note that the Suffolk County ballot happened before Ralph Nader withdrew his name as a Green Party candidate, so Nader’s name was on the Suffolk County ballot. Nader’s name was not on the ballots in the other places, because he had already withdrawn. So, the other vote Nader received was based on write-ins.

Here are the results:

Green Party of New York State statewide totals:

30 delegates to Cynthia McKinney
4 Delegates to Kent Mesplay
2 Delegate to Ralph Nader
2 Delegate to Jesse Johnson
2 Delegate to Uncommitted
Results breakdown by GPNYS Region:

1 Delegate to Cynthia McKinney
1 Delegate to Kent Mesplay

Region 1 – (Suffolk County)

1 Delegate to Ralph Nader

Region 2 – New York City

  1. While campaigning for the rights of the black minority of which you are a member, do not neglect the female MAJORITY of which you are also a member. Many women feel an urgent need to make a statement against the rampant sexism of the Democratic Party primaries. Your candidacy is vital!
