Lindenhurst Hale Storm August 2008: Bouncing around the car mirror

(More photos at “read more”) Ian and I had the interesting experience of a little summer hail in our lovely, Long Island environment. We were driving in Lindenhurst on Sunrise Highway around 6pmish, today, August 14, 2008, and there was rain, lightening, ominous clouds, and lots of hail. Ian says it was up to nickel size at least. It was difficult to tell, because it melts as it gets on the car. I think it was mostly little pieces, with a nickel or quarter thrown in for good luck here and there. It made the worst racket on the windshield, and made you think it might break the glass. A handful of people pulled over. But, mostly people just slowed down. Traffic was backed up on Sunrise Highway in both directions for a long time, even thought the hail only lasted a short time.

Our friend Justine from Pisces Cafe said they also got the storm over there in Babylon Village. She also thought the hail would break the glass. She said that the streets by Pisces Cafe (across from the Babylon LIRR Train Station) were flooded until the top of the sidewalk.

Here are some photos of the Lindenhurst Hail Storm looking out from our car. (Poor Ian drove, while I played around with photography.)

You have to use your imagination on this one. Could not get the right shot (without elbowing Ian in the eye as he was driving.) Our car is the silver-beige vague color. So, above the black strip, there is a thin strip that is the hood of the car, before the gray road. There are lots of pieces of hail collected on the hood.
