Nassau lawmakers to hear about spraying concerns

BY WILLIAM MURPHY 7:44 AM EDT, September 15, 2008

Breast cancer groups and environmentalists were expected to tell Nassau County legislators Monday morning about their concerns with last week’s aerial spraying against the West Nile virus over a large section of the county.

The activists said in interviews during the weekend that the county had not done enough to attack the mosquito population earlier — which might have made the spraying unnecessary — and they questioned whether the chemicals could cause breast cancer.

“We are going down to the legislature to bring this to their attention, said Laura Weinberg, president of the Great Neck Breast Cancer Coalition. “We were very frustrated that our concerns about spraying weren’t heard.”

Neal Lewis, executive director of the Neighborhood Network, an environmental group, said many county residents had complained they did not get proper notice of the spraying when it was first planned for Sept. 4 nor the night of the actual spraying last Wednesday….rest of story here.
