Someone’s photo of policemen at Hofstra is here. Just heard a report that 15 veterans were wrongly arrested when they tried to demonstrate for peace at the Hofstra gates on debate night. They are being called the “Hempstead 15”. – KW

The Wilder’s Coverage of Speeches and Debate Screening

Well, the presidential debates should have been open to all candidates who are on the ballot in enough states to win in the electoral college. At least! Maybe they should even be open to anyone on any ballot, or anyone daring enough to run. But, that matter is over for this season, I guess. We will all have to lobby and litigate the Commission on Presidential Debates for next time.

I wish Hofstra would have boycotted a debate that was unfair and unexclusive. Though, I will give Hofstra credit for allowing other ways for third parties and dissenting voices to be heard. They did allow a Public Area with a very loud, loud speaker by the peace demonstration. Ian was able to speak there at 3pm and talk about open debates and Green Party values. I was able to speak to a big crowd at 7pm, and I shared the stage with some other greens, including Betty Davis, a green from NYC, who spoke boldly and eloquently.

We also met lots of interesting people. Some of whom were excited about the Green message. I will write more tomorrow. Though, for now, here are some photos of the event. Some of the Public Area outdoor stage. Some of the alumni screening that we were able to attend since Ian is an alum.

[…] Betty Davis, co-chair of the Green Party Black Caucus (http://www.gpblackcaucus.com/): Blacks and Latinos were primary targets for lending corporations offering high-interest subprime loans, and were thus disproportionately hit by the subprime mortgage crisis. Blacks were especially vulnerable to such loans because they were denied the equity that whites have long enjoyed, a result of Federal Housing Administration redlining and racial discrimination in the granting of housing loans and mortgages during the mid 20th century.  These policies have had profound effects on the finances of Blacks long after discriminatory practices were outlawed.  The Center for Responsible Lending has found that, because of the mortgage meltdown, Latinos will have lost between $75 billion and $98 billion and Blacks between $71 billion and $92 billion in home-value wealth.  The victims of subprime loans should be first in line for aid that restores financial stability and the ability to keep one’s home […]
