Republican Bean Counter Strategy

During a phone conversation with a friend, it dawned on us.

The Republicans don’t care how they get votes. Many citizens don’t care about politics enough to study a subject or apply political judgment. So, you never know what formula the Republican political machine will apply to winning over undecided voters. Maybe they realized, that to win the most votes, all it would take would be a little bit of flattery.

Could it be? Maybe? That the Republicans have studied voting behavior and census records, and determined that they could win, if only they could appeal to every voter in America whose name is “Joe”?

First, it was Sarah Palin, walking to the middle of the debate stage and saying to Biden, “Do you mind if I call you Joe?” What a friendly statement accidentally heard over the microphone. (Or, was it an accident?) Later in the debate, she used the teasing phrase “Say it ain’t so, Joe”. It was a critique. Though, you know what, that seems less an attack than an exchange heard among friends. It is a kind of a jovial audio track to lay down. Especially if your name is Joe.

Then, there is Palin’s “Joe Six Pack.” Now, McCain has “Joe the Plumber.” This cannot be a coincidence.

I think that the Obama campaign managers need to get on top of this. Forget the wars. Forget single-payer healthcare. The battleground this time may not be Ohio, Florida, or any other swing state where the Republicans hold sway over the Board of Elections. In 2008, it is all about Joe. Go get him.

Meanwhile, in another corner of the blogosphere, Green Party members, Libertarians, and other people devoted to politics that matters will be discussing issues and proposing policies to save our country.
