Malik/Louisiana Update: Cao (Republican) wins in 2nd District

[Update: Dec 6th at 11:52pm. On the Secretary of State’s web-site, it is called as 100% of precincts reporting, with Cao as the winner by 3%!]

Malik seems to be holding steady at 3% (which may become bigger with certified results, because often pollworkers do not bother calling in third party numbers on election night.) [Update! at 11:53pm, with 100% reporting, Malik has 3%, which is 1,880 votes.]

The mainstream media has called it as a WIN for the Republican, Anh “Joseph” Cao (Cao is pronounced [Gow]).

Note that as per hints on the televised debates, and a brief perusal of google search results, it appears that Joseph Cao recently switched from a DEMOCRAT to a REPUBLICAN in a strategy to win this race. [Update, recently saw an interview with Cao that suggests he was an independent before his switch to Republican.] So, perhaps it is not exactly a Republican win after all…

La. voters oust indicted Rep. William Jefferson
NEW ORLEANS, 12.07.2008
By CAIN BURDEAU , Associated Press Writer

Voters in Louisiana have ousted indicted Democratic Rep. William Jefferson and sent a little-known Republican to Congress.

Unofficial results showed Republican attorney Anh “Joseph” Cao denying Jefferson a 10th term.

Republicans made an aggressive push to get rid of the 61-year-old incumbent, who has pleaded not guilty to charges of bribery, laundering money and misusing his congressional office.

Cao won a predominantly black and heavily Democratic district that covers most of New Orleans. He will become the first Vietnamese-American in Congress…Rest of story is here.
