Suffolk Police Commissioner Dormer makes stunning hate crime announcement

From the Long Island WINS blog

During a legislative committee meeting today, Suffolk Police Commissioner Richard Dormer revealed that the department was reviewing all police reports from the 5th Precinct, which covers Patchogue, for the entire year to see if there were hidden hate crimes embedded in the reports.

A review is to be welcomed. We really need to know what is going on out there. But the timing of the review is the blockbuster. It began two weeks ago.

Two weeks ago the higher-up were apparently questioning the reliability of the hate crime numbers in private, while publically chastising people like me who did the same! Even more to the point, Levy and Dormer both assured Suffolk residents of the unbiased nature of the hate crime stats just this weekend, a full week after Dormer, at least, privately began to question them.

This is why, while the review is welcome, it is not enough. The County’s hate crime record needs to be examined by an independent entity that realizes that more than Steve Levy’s politcal future is at stake. Andrew Cuomo, is your dance card full?
