Large percentage of Long Islanders have experienced hate crime

The whole article is worth reading, so, hope you will go to the jump to Newsday. With the recent murder of Ecuadorian immigrant Marcelo Lucero in Patchogue, many people are trying to understand the extent of racism and hate crime in Long Island. This poll shows the toll that hate crime takes on our community–people who are worried about it, and a large number of people who say they have been the victim of hate crimes. Unfortunately, police in Suffolk County have not been reporting hate crimes accurately, and in some cases, seemed to have brushed off people trying to report hate crimes. It adds to the concern that the Suffolk County and Nassau County police officials questioned by Newsday for this story “could not be reached for comment.”

Survey: Hate crimes worry Long Islanders
by Zachary R. Dowdy / February 28, 2009

Hate crimes worry Long Islanders, according to a recent poll that said 89 percent of its respondents are either very or somewhat concerned about hate crimes on Long Island.

The survey of 400 residents – 200 each in Nassau and Suffolk – conducted by researchers at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conn., also found that Long Islanders are highly aware of recent hate crimes here…

The Sacred Heart University/WSHU Public Radio Poll, which was conducted this month, also found 7 percent said they had been a victim of a hate crime. The margin of error for the random phone survey was plus or minus 5 percentage points.

Josh Klein, a Sacred Heart University political scientist who had no role in the study, said the victimization figures are alarming. A nearly 7 percent victimization rate is high for a democracy, he said.

“People underestimate the continuing problems of racism,” he said…

  1. Speaking of hate crime(s):

George W. Bush committed hate crimes of epic proportions and with the stench of terrorism (indicated in my blog).

George W. Bush did in fact commit innumerable hate crimes.

And I do solemnly swear by Almighty God that George W. Bush committed other hate crimes of epic proportions and with the stench of terrorism which I am not at liberty to mention.

The FBI knows what Bush did.

    Bush was absolute evil.

Bush is now like a fugitive from justice.

    Bush is a psychological prisoner.

Bush has a lot to worry about.

Bush can technically be prosecuted for hate crimes at any time.

In any case, Bush will go down in history in infamy.

(Something considerable: I don’t quite remember where I had read it before, but anyway, it is a linguistically excellent phrase, and please let me share it—it goes kind of like this: “If only it were possible to ban invention that bottled up memory so it never got stale and faded.” Oh wait—actually—off of the top of my head, I think the quotation came from my Lower Merion High School yearbook.)
