Top Ten Reasons To Like Third Parties

This video relates indirectly to the current Republican coup happening in the NY State Senate. Check out “Reason Number Three” to like third parties and you will see why.

I think that if there were third party Senators in the mix, the NY State Senate would be a lot more small “d” democratic, and it would have been more difficult for two Democratic officials who are under clouds of suspicion to influence the balance so drastically.

Though, this whole event is, in fact, being affected by the influence of third parties.
Tom Golisano gained  much of his knowledge and influence by propping up the Independence Party and by having run for Governor on that third party line. In addition, the Working Families Party is having a strong lobby and affect on the two rogue democratic Senators.

Though, I am not sure that it is a good plan for the Democrats to beg either of those two back into the fold. It would have been more noble and brave of the Democratic leadership to try to dump those two (or hurry their investigations/prosecutions) and/or seek the votes of more worthy Senators (ie: some moderate or progressive Republicans, perhaps.)

  1. You make some really good points here, I especially like seven through ten. It made me wonder to what extent people are turned off by the idea of third party politics precisely because they can, or would have more of an effect more quickly and more easily in the smaller group. It becomes a greater commitment.
