Green Party Nat’l Meeting: Friday eve update

Post meeting wrap-up with full list of Steering Committee candidates: here

Roger Snyder, GP-US NC Rep for New York and Chair of the Green Party of Suffolk, is on the ground in Durham, North Carolina for the Green Party of the United States Annual National Meeting.

Here are some reports from Roger:

One of the topics is elections for Steering Committee. There are four open Co-Chair positions. In addition, the term of the Secretary is ending.

So far, it is clear that two of the candidates for Co-Chair will be:
Les Evenchick and Mike Feinstein.

Alfred Molison has announced he wants to run. It seems like he announced for Co-Chair, but not sure if he is eligible. (If he is an alternate delegate, it is unclear if he could run for Co-Chair. But, even a non-delegate can run for Secretary.) [Update: Alfred Molison decided not to run, as other people stepped up the plate, and he is very busy with other Green Party work.]

Jason Nabewaniec is a present Co-Chair. Word is that he may run again if there does not seem to be a full slate of volunteers.

Incumbent Secretary Holly Hart has said that she will run again for Secretary if no one else will.

The nominations will end sometime during the meeting. Though, the vote will take place on line, where the delegates usually vote on proposals. The full rules for voting are at the national web page here. It appears that the voting will begin the day after the meeting, and go on for about three weeks, the same cycle as a proposal.

The Single Payer Health Care Forum went well. There was a lot of good information. Roger Snyder posted the best quote of the evening on his Facebook page: “Health insurance is like a hospital gown, you think you are covered but you are not.” Carl Romanelli (2006 Green Party candidate for U.S. Senate from PA).

Former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney will be addressing the meeting tomorrow, Saturday, July 25th at 3:30pm. The topics will include her recent attempt to bring humanitarian relief via boat to Gaza. Roger does not think Ms. McKinney has arrived at the meeting as of 9pm this evening, because he has not noticed any buzz of celebrity.

  2. It has just been made known to me that Michael Feinstein, the man from Santa Monica, who self proclaims he is the founder of the Green Party, is attempting to serve as co-chair at the National Convention. Doesn’t in the slight surprise any of us. He’s a sick man.
This man has no scruples. I most recently attended a Santa Monica Quaker meeting where the topic of discussion should have focused on Saving the Trees of Santa Monica, but Feinstein as usual, monopolized the discussion running his mouth about his past laurels, driving most of the listeners away. Most of us remember how Feinstein was the center of an investigation for misappropriating GP donations, which he still does not culp to. Will this ever end?
