On Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at 7pm, the Babylon Green Party Gathering will feature will feature “Civil Liberties for Activists” with Andrea Callan, Esq. of the NYCLU. The event will be held at at a private residence in North Babylon, NY. Since the regular gathering place of Pisces Café has closed, the gatherings will be held in private homes until a new public gathering place can be arranged. Andrea Callan is an attorney and director of the Suffolk County Chapter of the New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) which is an affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).  Currently, in her work with the NYCLU, she focuses on issues of immigration, students’ rights, privacy and security, LGBT rights, racial justice, reproductive rights, and police conduct.

Callan commented on her upcoming gathering:

Knowing your rights is the first step in standing up for them. Activists can be much more effective when they’re educated about the rights and tools available to them. We hope to empower folks so they can make a difference on the streets and in the halls of government in their communities.

The NYCLU is dedicated to the protection of civil liberties as embodied in the Bill of Rights. The mission of the NYCLU is to defend the constitutional rights of the people we serve through advocacy and involvement in the legislative process, and to educate the community about civil liberties issues. Callan graduated cum laude from Purdue University in 2003, earning her Bachelor of Arts in Law & Society, with minors in Political Science, Philosophy, History and English. After graduation, she went on to work for the law firm of Boylan, Brown, Code, Vigdor & Wilson, LLP in Rochester, NY, where she worked in the firm’s real estate division. In 2007, Callan earned her Juris Doctor degree from Touro Law School. Following law school, she went to work for a private firm specializing in plaintiff-side federal civil rights litigation focusing on discrimination in the workplace, then joined the NYCLU in June 2008.

Callan is the recipient of several awards, including:

  • “Best Honors Dissertation” for her research and paper entitled “The Faces of the Races: A study of the changing images of African-Americans surrounding the Civil Rights Movement;”
  • the Touro Law School “Service to the Bar Award” for her work in promoting American Bar Association programs in law schools throughout New York State;
  • and the Touro Law School award for “Exceptional Service to the Public & Community” for her service as an Executive Board member and legal volunteer for the Suffolk County Chapter of the NYCLU, and as President of the Touro NYCLU student group.

Babylon Green Party Gatherings are held on the first Wednesday of every month:

  • The March 3, 2010 Gathering will feature Cynthya BrianKate on “Gender Issues in Social Movements”
  • The April 7, 2010 Gathering will feature the poetry of Charles Bukowski read by Jeff Arthur.
