2010: Long Island Poetry Collective presents Super Poem Sunday

2011 Update: This year’s Super Poem Sunday at the Walt Whitman Birthplace will be Sunday, February 6, 2011 from 12pm to 4pm. Info: here.

Please join the Long Island Poetry Collective for the second annual bout of Super Poem Sunday on February 7th, 2010!  Before going off to the same old boring Super Bowl party, join the LIPC at the Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site and Interpretive Center,246 Old Walt Whitman Road, West Hills, NY 11746-4148.  from high noon until 4 p.m. to take part in our own spin on championship!  For directions, please contact the Whitman Birthplace at (631) 427-5240, or email them at wwba@optonline.net. There will be a $10 donation requested to join us, which includes food and beverages.

On the heels of last year’s success, Super Poem Sunday II promises to be – is it possible? – an even better event! Can anyone outdo last year’s winners?

This year’s theme for SPS II is “full contact poetry.” This is a fun event geared towards those of all ages who may want to celebrate the idea of competition, but have an alternative to watching football. However, the event will end early enough so that all who wish should be able to attend any other Super Bowl party they may be attending.

There will be raffles, including a 50/50 raffle and monetary prize to the best original slam performance! Heroes and drinks will also be provided to those in attendance to keep the ‘Super Bowl’ feeling alive for the event. The audience will also have a chance to be involved as judges, or cheer with the LIPC Cheerleaders at the half time show!

The afternoon will start with a three minute allotment for contestants during the slam to perform works from others or their own if they so choose. The idea is to evoke the feel of a poetry “slam” without the confines of all the rules. If time allows, we can go to overtime and partake in other games and poetry activities.

This is a great way to enjoy the atmosphere of Super Bowl Sunday! At this event, there will be no lopsided, blow-out scores or off-color commercials, no relentless time-outs, or boring commentary – only getting together with people who get bored by that stuff, but love language!

Who will be the next Vince Lombardi? The next Most Valuable Poet?
Join us and find out – it could be you!
