“We Made a Devil’s Bargain”: Fmr. President Clinton Apologizes for Trade Policies that Destroyed Haitian Rice Farming

IW:  Hallelujah!  It’s ironic that Clinton had an epiphany over trade.  The last straw that made me leave the Democratic Party was seeing his VP, Al Gore, on television defending NAFTA against Ross Perot.  Yeah, that Al Gore.  The one and the same.  And as usual, the corporate media painted Perot, the former 3rd party candidate, as “crazy”. And I gotta mention that one of the best radio interviews ever was Clinton was when an unwitting Prez Clinton was calling radio programs to support his wife’s US Senate run, and didn’t realize they had dialed Democracy Now.

from DemocracyNow.org

President Bill Clinton, now the UN Special Envoy to Haiti, publicly apologized last month for forcing Haiti to drop tariffs on imported, subsidized US rice during his time in office. The policy wiped out Haitian rice farming and seriously damaged Haiti’s ability to be self-sufficient. On Wednesday, journalist Kim Ives of Haiti Liberté questioned Clinton about his change of heart and his stance on the return of ousted Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.

  1. Bill Clinton knew he was speaking to Democracy Now.
That was actually one of Goodman’s most embarrassing interviews as she kept saying ‘just one more question.’ I agree with Hugh Hamilton that it’s not the bright spot Goodman claims it is.
