Oil Blowout In The Gulf: Straight Talk From Geologist Chris Landau

Dear President Barack Obama and Dr. Tony Haywood (BP) by Chris Landau (geologist)

Action plan to stop the continuing oil blowout from the well drilled by The Deep Water Horizon Rig owned by Transocean and leased to BP.

Straight talk from geologist Chris Landau.

Dear President Barack Obama

President Obama, I would like you to Fire Coast Guard Rear Adm. Mary Landry with her comments like “I would caution you not to get fixated on an estimate of how much is out there.” Every time she opens her mouth, she appears to not know what she is talking about. I remember a week ago when she assured us there was no more leaking oil. Rather tell it like it is. The world is watching and she is ten years behind in damage control mitigation. She makes you look bad.

Dear Dr. Tony Haywood (BP)

“This is highly imprecise, highly imprecise,” agreed Doug Suttles, BP’s chief operating officer for exploration and production. “We continue to respond to a much more significant case so that we’re prepared for that in the eventuality that the rate is higher.”’

What on earth are these platitudes about? Is this English? If so, it is highly imprecise.

I am sure you can find somebody who is more eloquent. BP needs intelligent people to help change the world. Two lines of wasted space. We do not want to listen to “nothing” talk.

Stop the ongoing oil blowout and stop calling it a “spill.”

Was it spilt from the top? There was no tanker that spilt anything. This is the oil from deep below being blown up by huge underground pressures. Call it a gusher, if for no other reason than to create a sense of urgency. This is not one of those problems that will go away on its own accord. By the time this is over, the USA will have lost Mexico, The Central American Countries and all the Caribbean Islands as friends. They rely on their pristine beaches for tourism. This well will have destroyed it all. The speed of spread of oil is so rapid, despite the oil dispersants that are being dumped on it. You have grossly under estimated the flow. Imagine oil gushing uncontrolled from deep below the ocean waves. This may give you a picture of what is going on. Please do not use spill. That is silly and misleading.

An Action Plan

As nobody there seems to have an action plan, let me suggest one. Set up six rigs, evenly around the blowout well, about 400 meters (1320 feet) from the well that is leaking oil, that the Deep horizon oil rig drilled. Get them to drill straight down. Do not drill any directional wells. That is asking for trouble. Make sure they do not intersect the existing casing. Make sure they keep their mud weight up while drilling and make sure you equip them with at least 3 blowout preventer valves per drilling rig, that are checked before they are installed. You might also use three different companies for sourcing these valves.

Equip all the wells and start pumping, so that you drain the formations rapidly of oil and gas and relieve the pressure on the existing well so that it can be sealed. Do this fast. You are wasting time. Oil is shooting out at everybody in the gulf. Oil is killing the world. Please do not use Halliburton for the cement work or Transocean for the drilling. Do not use the mudman that was supposed to be monitoring the mud weight. Do not use the geologists that were supposed to be monitoring the mud weight. Do not use the company man that was supposed to be monitoring all of this. Am I stating the obvious? I hope so.

Lastly if the casing is lying on its side at the bottom of the ocean, that is OK for the moment. If it is close to the surface, it would be better to cut it off at the bottom of the ocean, so that the one mile of sea water can at least make it harder for the oil to push out against the 150 atmospheres or bars of sea water pressure. If the pipe is close to the surface the oil and gas is coming out into an unpressurized zone. Make sure the pipe is at the bottom of the ocean or cut if off and put your cement dome over it with a pipe leading to onshore or to oil tankers.

You have a major disaster on your hands. Face facts, the quicker you do, the quicker you will find the solution.

As a geologist, who has worked on high pressure, gas fields, you have a major problem here. Face facts. Get going, get the oil industry involved. Make them save the Gulf of Mexico.

Get started. Be effective.

  1. What a beautiful leak – twenty thousand barrels of lovely lube a day. I love the oily mass that bulges outwards from a bent pipe. A brown Rorschach blot of the automobile culture.

An endless orgasm of brown to win the King’s crown. The ejaculate of Hell sent by the wind-whipped swell.

My most fervent hope is that all efforts to stop and mitigate this masterwork are failures. The incontinent flow of hydrocarbons shall continue for the decay of all.

I would love to see a sea of greasy Devil’s blood flowing into the ocean forever more. The spew that flew right on through.

Then the World can move on into its next phase, the Dark Phase of death, decline and destruction. Soon, all the works of humans will decay and so too will themselves be brought to the altar of slaughter, to account for their crimes of existence.

  2. Excellent commentary w_suggested solutions.

  3. Spoken like a true environmentalist. Destruction is your first name. You can’t create or process, so you destroy, thinking your schemes will change things. Why don’t people on this website just openly link to the New Age Germans who operated openly in the 1940s. Oh they had the same environmental movement which said destroy people for the sake of a pure race and pure surroundings. For several decades sanity was restored, only to have incompetent individuals fill themselves with pride and start howling in the dark again.
