Guv cand Hawkins (G-NY) Decries NYS Senate Defeat of Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act

The only way that the Green Party can regain ballot status in NY is to get 50,000 votes for their Governor candidate in 2010. This opportunity comes only once every four years, and it only applies to the Governor’s race. Gaining ballot status will enable the Green Party to run more peace candidates, more single-payer candidates, more anti-fracking candidates, and more sustainable energy candidates. The last time that the Green Party of New York State had ballot status it set the record for running the most Green candidates of any state.

Howie Hawkins for GPNYS Guv by Shawna ColeHowie Hawkins, the Green Party of New York State candidate for Governor, expressed his disappointment today over the defeat of the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act, which would protect against discrimination on the basis of gender identity and expression in areas like housing and employment. The bill was killed Tuesday morning in the senate judiciary committee. All Republican members as well as Democratic state Senator Ruben Diaz voted against the bill.

Hawkins said:

The Greens support full rights for all members of our society, regardless of sexual orientation or gender. Green Party members like Mayor Jason West of New Paltz have provided critical leadership to issues such as the right to same-sex marriage. As Governor, I intend to follow his example and use my office to push for full rights for all New Yorkers.
