Mon Aug 9 Lakeside Theatre Hosts Third Annual Harry Chapin Tribute

In July of 1981, folk singer and activist Harry Chapin died in an auto accident on the way to perform at Eisenhower Park. This summer, on Monday, August 9, at 7 pm, a number of Long Island’s top singer-songwriters will again gather in Eisenhower Park to pay tribute to Chapin at the outdoor theater that bears his name.

This year’s concert will include a ceremony during which Long Island Cares Director Paule Pachter will present a special commemorative plaque to Nassau County for installation near the stage. Chapin’s widow, Sandy, and daughter Jen, herself a touring singer-songwriter, are expected to attend the 7 pm unveiling, as is Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano.

Entitled “Just Wild About Harry,” the concert, set to begin at 7:30 p.m., will include 18 of Chapin’s story songs — ranging from hits like “Cat’s In the Cradle” and “Taxi” to lesser-known numbers like “Sunday Morning Sunshine” and “Jubilation.” Besides Markus, artists slated to perform include Hillary Foxsong, Joe Iadanza, Doc Butler & JC Cob, Lisa Itts, Josh Joffen, Debra Lynne & Chris Tursi, Russ Seeger, MediaCrime, Christine Solimeno, Frank Walker, Kenny Forgione, Hank Stone, Judith Zweiman, Martha Trachtenberg & Andy Huenerberg, Cecilia Kirtland, and Kendall & Korb.

“Admission to the concert is free, but concert-goers are asked to bring donations of non-perishable food for Long Island Cares and cash donations for World Hunger Year, charities founded by Chapin.

The concert, organized by Malverne singer-songwriter Stuart Markus, is the fifth annual assemblage of Chapin’s friends and admirers at the Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre in Eisenhower Park World Hunger Year Executive Director Bill Ayres, who co-founded the organization with Chapin, is expected to be on hand at the concert along with representatives from both charities, to assist with collections. Members of the Island Songwriters Showcase, a workshop group that traces its roots back to Chapin’s living room get-togethers in the 1970s, are also planning to volunteer.
