The seven-member Yonkers-based band –fresh from impressing audiences during this summer’s Falcon Ridge and Huntington Folk Festivals — brings its eclectic mix of riveting traditional and original songs to Bay Shore on Saturday night, September 11. Spuyten Duyvil opens the 2010-2011 season for The Eclectic Café (www.eclecticcafe.org), a monthly concert series held at the Unitarian Universalist Society of South Suffolk at 28 Brentwood Road, Bay Shore. The 8:30 p.m. concert, for which tickets are $10, will be preceded by an hour-long open mic starting at 7:30p.m.

To some, Spuyten Duyvil conjures up images of spitting or spinning devils. To others, it refers to the creek that originally separated Manhattan from Riverdale in the Bronx. But an ever-growing number of people who enjoy alternative roots music know Spuyten Duyvil as a musical group whose sound wanders the last 100 years of American music conjuring embittered civil war veterans, recalcitrant small town bawds, suicidal bureaucrats, star-crossed lovers and brave-hearted fools navigating the mysteries of daily life.

Mark Miller, Spuyten Duyvil’s primary songwriter, who also sings and plays tenor guitar and bouzouki said:

We’ve had a great summer on the festival circuit and are really looking forward to playing this excellent listening room. A venue like The Eclectic Cafe gives us the opportunity to dive more deeply into the songs, the stories and the local history that inspires them.

Joining Miller in the band are Beth Kaufman (vocals), Tom Socol (guitar and dobro), Sarah Banks (fiddle and vocals), Jim Meigs (harmonica), Lou Geser (drums) and John Neidhart (bass).
