“DC’s 2nd Party” Convention & Statehood Green Party Candidate Forum 8/22/10

The DC Statehood Green Party will hold a party convention for all voters registered in the party, on Sunday, August 22, at the Elks Lodge in Washington, DC.  The event will feature a Statehood Green candidates’ forum in preparation for the September 14 primary election.

The candidates’ forum, beginning at noon, will be the first event in the convention after a brief reception and lunch at 11:30 am.

Statehood Greens will vote on two contested primary races on September 14, for nonvoting DC Delegate to the US House (Eleanor Holmes Norton’s seat) and At-Large Member of DC Council.  A list of all Statehood Green candidates on the primary ballot follows below.

Reporters and the public are invited to attend and observe.  The convention will also have issues panels on DC statehood, education, and jobs (beginning at 2 pm) and a party-building strategy session (3:15 pm).

On Saturday, August 14, all seven DC Statehood Green candidates participated in the People’s Candidates Forum at SisterSpace and Books (http://www.sisterspacedc.com).  The Statehood Green candidates dominated the forum, since no candidates from other parties showed up.  Statehood Greens have participated in numerous other candidate forums throughout the city.

The DC Statehood Green Party has been called “DC’s Second Party” after Statehood Greens drew more votes than Republicans in recent elections, including 2006, when the two parties each ran five candidates: 45,421 votes for Statehood Green candidates, 34,658 for Republicans.  In 2008, a presidential election year, Statehood Greens received 81,463 votes, Republicans 77,994 votes.
