A beautiful action to lobby against war

Yellow rosesOctober 7, 2010 marked the 9th Anniversary of the War in Afghanistan. Local activist Charlotte Koons came up with her own, creative way, to express her misgivings about war with the beautiful and powerful action described below.

(If you would like to say no to war, you can join Long Island peace groups who will demonstrate at the Smith Haven Mall this Saturday, October 9th at 2pm. Info: here.)

The story and poem from Charlotte Koons:

Yellow Roses tinged with red
To commemorate those who Bled
Both our soldiers & the Afghani dead
9 Years of Endless War
Enough!  No more!
Your constituents have long said.

This poem, pinned to a bouquet of 2 dozen Latin Beauty Roses, is what I presented to a staff member in the ante-room of Steve Israel’s office on October 7th, 2010.  In a red folder, I  also handed in “The Human Costs of War”, along with the LI Alliance Press Release.

A bit stunned, she asked who the roses were for.  I replied tersely, ” For all of you.  Remember it is the 9th Anniversary of our invasion and occupation of Afghanistan”.

On the verge of tears, I turned on my heel, and left before she could respond.
