NEW PUBLICATION: Palm Card: Know Your Rights When Facing a Suspension (2010) (280.43 KB)
On Tuesday10/12/10 through Friday10/15/10 next week, the New York Civil Liberties Union and its volunteers will visit public high schools in each New York City borough to inform students of their rights when confronted by police or military recruiters at school, and their right to confidential sexual health care services.
The Week of Action, an annual event, encompasses all of the NYCLU’s youth advocacy work: school safety, aggressive military recruitment and teen health and reproductive rights. Schools will be targeted for one of the three issues. Volunteers will visit selected campuses either before first bell or when school lets out to distribute information to students.
On Tuesday, volunteers will visit schools that are heavily targeted by military recruiters. They will distribute the NYCLU’s No Student Left Unrecruited palm card, which answers questions about students’ rights regarding military recruitment.
On Wednesday, volunteers will visit schools located in neighborhoods with high teen pregnancy rates. They will distribute the NYCLU’s Your Rights to Sexual Health Services palm card and other materials that explain students’ health care rights and their legal rights if they become pregnant or have children.
On Thursday and Friday, volunteers will visit schools that have permanent metal detectors, high suspension rates and a heavy police presence. They will hand out the NYCLU’s Know Your Rights with Police in Schools palm card, which provides information on students’ rights when reacting with NYPD personnel in the public schools.

Like anything else, the information provided to the students can be useful as long as they are presented with both sides of each issue so that they can make their own informed decision regardless.
