Jane Eyre: New video and link to trailer

See below for link to trailer at MTV.

What are you going to do while you wait in eager anticipation for the new Jane Eyre movie, coming out in March 2011?

Me: I made a video project. Hope you will be interested in watching it. I promise it does not have any real plot spoilers. (Though, people will read it differently before and after they have read the book or seen the movie.) See other ideas about what to do while you wait after my video…

So, Charlotte Bronte’s novel Jane Eyre is written in the gothic style. The suspense is a lot of the fun. So, if you have not experienced Jane Eyre yet, and you want the 2011 movie with Mai Wasikowska to be your first experience, better lay off the other versions of the story until March!

Though, if you feel like you would be remiss to postpone this new literary experience that has piqued your interest, I have an idea. Consider reading Shirley, another novel by Charlotte Bronte. (Jane Eyre was published in 1847. Shirley was published in 1849.)

I will tell you up front that the beginning of Shirley gets bogged down. You may not relish the first few chapters with some English clerics arguing and the plot lines being set down. Though, after you dive in, there is a lot of drama, interesting reflections on the industrial revolution, and a really great love story. Like Jane Eyre and other books by Charlotte Bronte, there are also hints of feminism, with strong and interesting women characters.

Did you know that the name Shirley used to be a man’s name? It only became a woman’s name after–and because of–Charlotte Bronte’s book. In addition, I believe that it was a beautiful passage from the book Shirley that truly inspired the song “Sirens”, a hit from Jane Eyre The Musical.

Hope you enjoy my video above, and share it with other feminists, Bronte-files, and Jane Eyre junkies. Hope you dive into Charlotte Bronte. And, I will be waiting with you for the March 2011 movie…

Sincerely,
Kimberly Wilder
