The Long Island Music Hallof Fame  with DMC and Public Enemy are Proud to Announce the Winners of the 1st Spoken Word Poetry Contest

The Long Island Music Hall of Fame (LIMHoF), Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, and Public Enemy announce the winners of their first spoken word poetry contest. The contest called for entrants to write a long poem about their home on Long Island, download an original music track, composed by DJ Johnny Juice (Public Enemy), and submit a recording of their performance of the spoken word reading set to the 3-minute music track. Winners will receive their choice of Band Hero or DJ Hero (age permitting).

The winners are:

  • *Grades 1-6 *Amagansett (awarded to the group of KatieMcGovern, Camille Barrett, Aspen Segelken, Arleigh Rodgers, Abby Quin Nanci Ross)
  • *Grades 7-9 *Sami Chowdhury, 8th Grade, Woodland Middle School
  • *Grades 10-12 *Dimitri Jones, 12th Grade, Brentwood HS

DJ Johnny Juice of Public Enemy was so impressed with the quality of the submissions that he offered the winners a chance to do a recording session with him at Chuck D‘s studio.

LIMHoF Chair of the Educational Committee Tom Needham said:

We hope that the Long Island Music Hall of Fame Spoken Word/Music Contest will become an annual school event, like the successful Walt Whitman Contest. It is an exciting alternative that encourages students to utilize new technology, and check out modern local creative voices like Chuck D and DMC. It should be a lot of fun.

DJ Johnny Juice is a DJ, producer and Emmy nominated composer. His work, especially with the first two Public Enemy albums, is part of Hip-Hop history. He has worked as a producer/composer/arranger/musician/engineer/consultant for over two decades, and has produced Award winning and best selling CDs for such Hip-Hop artists as Public Enemy, Slick Rick, Beastie Boys, KRS-One, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels.

D.M.C. was part of the influential hip hop group, RUN DMC from Hollis, in the Queens borough of New York City. Founded by Joseph “DJ Run” Simmons, Darryl “D.M.C.” McDaniels, and Jason “Jam-Master Jay” Mizell, the group is arguably the most important and influential act in the history of hip hop. RUN DMC was inducted into LIMHoF in 2006.

PUBLIC ENEMY, also known as PE, is an influential hip hop group from Long Island, New York, known for its politically charged lyrics, criticism of the media, and active interest in the concerns of the African American community. In 2004, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked Public Enemy number forty-four on its list of the Immortals: 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. In 2008 PUBLIC ENEMY was inducted into LIMHoF.
