Please join the Long Island Poetry Collective for the third annual bout of Super Poem Sunday on February 6th, 2011!!!

Instead of or before going off to the same old boring Super Bowl party, join the LIPC at the Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site and Interpretive Center from high noon until 4 p.m. to take part in our own spin on championship!

Super Poem Sunday has undoubtedly become THE poetry event of the year, and it can only get better with Super Poem Sunday III ! Bring your best, no less will do!

This year’s theme for SPS III is “poetry blitz.” This is a fun event geared towards those of all ages who may want to celebrate the idea of competition, but have an alternative to watching football. However, the event will end early enough so that all who wish should be able to arrive at any other Super Bowl party they may be attending.

There will be raffles and a prize to the best original slam performance! Heroes and drinks will also be provided to those in attendance to keep the ‘Super Bowl’ feeling alive for the event. The audience will also have a chance to be involved as judges, or cheer with the LIPC Cheerleaders at the half time show!

The afternoon will start with a three minute allotment for contestants during the slam to perform works from others or their own if they so choose. The idea is to evoke the feel of a poetry “slam” without the confines of all the rules. If time allows, we can go to overtime and partake in other games and poetry activities.

This is a great way to enjoy the atmosphere of Super Bowl Sunday! At this event, there will be no lopsided, blow-out scores or off-color commercials, no relentless time-outs, or boring commentary – only getting together with people who get bored by that stuff, but love language!

Who will be the next Joe Namath? Carry home the MVP Trophy?
Join us and find out – it could be you!

Looking for Super Bowl poems?

Here is the link (again) that I stuck on the top of this post. It goes to voices.net, where they have a whole index of football poems from poets around the word: Voices.net

Here – with excerpt below –  is an interesting, light-hearted poem about the Superbowl.

All eyes are glued to the huge TV
All spirits blend in harmony

And — a little off topic — a link to my favorite sports poem, “Casey at the Bat”.

Please like and/or rate this post. Thanks! – Kimberly
