Thoughts on the killing of Osama bin Laden

Update: For confusion on the MLK “not even an enemy” quote, see explanation post: here.

Ian and Kimberly’s message on the killing of Osama bin Laden…

Some of the people we admire most in the world are Gandhi, Buddha, Jesus of Nazareth, and Martin Luther King, Jr. They opposed all killing, and found nonviolent ways to create justice and social change. None of them would be happy with the manner in which the United States targeted and killed Osama bin Laden.

It is a dangerous precedent for the United States Government and President Obama to use extra-judicial killings – instead of correct, judicial procedures – to target people who are claimed to have done wrong. First of all, innocent people may perish, such as the young grandchildren of Gaddafi. Secondly, this unaccountable procedure could be used against political enemies (such as environmentalists, animal rights activists, peace activists, whistle-blowers, or potential rival candidates).

‎[Correction – quote of modern commenter – “I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy.’] And, then….quote of MLK…”Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” -Martin Luther King, Jr

Thank you for your consideration,

Ian and Kimberly Wilder
