06/18 Saturday 9:30 A.M.-2 P.M. Piping Plover Poetry Writing Workshop Poets , your language skills can help. They are enduring severe environmental disruption. poetry writing workshop conducted by Maxwell C. Wheat, Jr., at the Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center, Jones Beach State Park. Introductory Talk & Guided Walk . To Register & for Directions Phone: 516-780-3295 Jerry Ahern, Sea Cliff, song writer, guitarist, folk singer sharing his environmental and Long Island songs. Bring Brown Bag Lunch, Pens, Pencils for Outdoor Notes, Notebook, (If Possible)—Binoculars Poems will be collected and sent with authors’ permission to organizations involved with these animals suggesting they be used for newsletters, read at meetings, etc. Newsday in spring carries frequent stories about the Piping Plover when Nature Conservation and other volunteers rope and fence off this endangered species’ ocean beach nesting territories, annoying nearby home and second-home owner residents sighting these protective efforts out their windows. These plover nest and hatch young on sandy terrain among the dunes, blocking people’s easy access to the surf. These areas thus are protected from human intrusion—hence news provoking conflicts between property owners and the plover protectors. A situation calling for poetic attention and advocacy with the words and phases of powerful verse that Paumanouk Poets can produce.
