Yom Kippur Service at Occupy Wall Street

Kol Nidre at Wall Street

When: Friday, October 7th, 7-10pm

Where: Zuccotti Park

This Friday night begins Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. Called to account, we stand as a community and ask for forgiveness in the plural voice. Collectively, we bear responsibility for our neighbor’s sins and well-being. Where better to perform this ritual this year than at Wall Street, alongside thousands of protesters taking a stand against economic injustice?

On Friday, JFREJ will join with Jews throughout the city in Zucotti Park holding a Yom Kippur service, following the words of Isiah:

This is the fast I have chosen:
to unlock the shackles of injustice,
to loosen the ropes of the yoke,
to let the oppressed go free,
and to tear every yoke apart!

Please note: The service will be a Hebrew language service (traditional egalitarian).

You can RSVP and/or invite friends through the FaceBook group:

If possible, please bring your own Yom Kippur machzor. If you do not have a machzor, we will have ~100, graciously loaned to us by The Rabbinical Assembly for Conservative Judaism. If you prefer, you can download and print this PDF: http://d.1ski.me/3V2m263m460P1m0R3l0K. Save some trees by printing two-up, double sided. It is an Orthodox translation, as that was the only free one available online.

This event has been endorsed by Jews for Racial & Economic Justice (JFREJ) and the Shalom Center

  1. […] Celebrate Yom Kippur with all the dirty hippies in Zuccotti Park tomorrow night. […]

    • I’d rather celebrate Yom Kippur with a dirty hippie who strives to build a just world than with a clean shaven, well dressed putz who has no such concerns.

      • I couldn’t agree with your more. I am well past the “Hippie” stage but I do know there has to be change. The banks and Wall Street have to be held accountable. I am proud of what they are doing and speaking up. Someone has to. Our government certainly isn’t.
