YOUNG POETS NEEDED!

THE LONG ISLAND MUSIC HALL OF FAME WITH DMC and PUBLIC ENEMY ARE PROUD TO PRESENT THE SECOND ANNUAL SPOKEN WORD POETRY CONTEST

One Grand Prize Winner Will Get In-Studio Visit With DJ Johnny Juice
(Public Enemy)

The Long Island Music Hall of Fame (LIMHoF), Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, and Public Enemy present the second annual spoken word poetry contest. The contest calls for entrants to write a long poem about their home on Long Island, set it to an instrumental music track of their choice, and submit a recording
of their performance of the spoken word reading set to the 3-minute music track. The deadline for entries is December 23, 2011.

DMC and Chuck D (Public Enemy) will judge the finalists in three
categories: grades 1-6, grades 7-9, grades 10-12. Winners for each age
group will receive iPods. One grand prize winner will receive a
special in-studio visit to the studio of DJ Johnny Juice. Full details
about the contest and rules for entry are available at
http://www.limusichalloffame.org/ed/spokenword/poetry_2011/.

LIMHoF Chair of the Educational Committee Tom Needham said, “We hope
that the Long Island Music Hall of Fame Spoken Word/Music Contest will
become an annual school event, like the successful Walt Whitman
Contest. It is an exciting alternative that encourages students to
utilize new technology, and check out modern local creative voices
like Chuck D and DMC. It should be a lot of fun.”

DJ Johnny Juice is a Strong Island DJ/producer/performer/turntablist
and Emmy-nominated composer. He is known for his historic work on
multiple Public Enemy albums.

D.M.C. was part of the influential hip hop group, RUN DMC from Hollis,
Queen, New York. Founded by Joseph “DJ Run” Simmons, Darryl “D.M.C.”
McDaniels, and Jason “Jam-Master Jay” Mizell, the group is arguably
the most important and influential act in the history of hip hop. RUN
DMC was inducted into LIMHoF in 2006.

PUBLIC ENEMY, also known as PE, is an influential hip hop group from
Long Island, New York, known for its politically charged lyrics,
criticism of the media, and active interest in the concerns of the
African American community. In 2004, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked
Public Enemy number forty-four on its list of the Immortals: 100
Greatest Artists of All Time. In 2008 PUBLIC ENEMY was inducted into
LIMHoF.
