Long Islanders: The Perseid Meteor showers will peak in the sky over your home on the nights of Sunday (into Monday), August 11th and Monday, August 12th. The best time to view from Long Island will be about 11pm to 6am, with the show starting to get good around midnight.

It is best to get away from city lights. So, if you are on Long Island, consider finding a New York State Park to view from. The Wilders will pick a park and watch tonight. The Wilders will try to watch from their backyard. Maybe we will have a good picture to share tomorrow!

Update after 10pm: Because it is expected to be cloudy on Long Island tonight, it might not be that great a view. If you decide to watch in a low-key way, here is a link to the weather channel post with the NASA live feed link of the meteor shower:

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that several Long Island State Parks will remain open during the nighttime hours for viewing of the Perseids Meteor Shower on the evening of Sunday August 11, 2013. Peak viewing times are 11:00PM, Sunday, August 11 until dawn the next morning.

There will be no charge and the normal star gazing permit will not be required. You must remain near your vehicle.

We suggest that you dress appropriately, bring bug spray, and a chair that reclines. Binoculars are not necessary. Look towards the northeast and enjoy the celestial show.

State Parks that will remain open for viewing are:
• Jones Beach State Park – West End II
• Gov. Alfred E. Smith/Sunken Meadow State Park – Field 3
• Montauk Point State Park – Upper Parking Lot
• Robert Moses State Park – Field 2

  1. do you mean MONDAY august 11th, or SUNDAY august 10th??

    • This post was from 2013. I changed the headline to make that clear. Viewing is better in 2014 on Monday 8/11/14 when the Super Moon starts waning.
