BEE the Change You Hope to See in the World

Homecoming Farm will be offering its Sixth Annual Spring Awakening as a gathering for those who care about the future of our Earth.  This year’s  program is entitled “BEE the Change You Hope to See in the World…A Celebration of All Things Bees!” It take place on April 16, 2016 from 9:30 am – 3:00 pm at Helen Butler Hall at Dominican Village, 565 Albany Avenue, Amityville, NY  11701. Registration is required at $40 per person which includes lunch.

This will be a wonderful program for beekeepers, gardeners, honey- lovers and anyone who wants to learn more about the world of bees on Long Island.  Proceeds from the event will benefit Homecoming Farm.   Please visit their website at www.homecomingearth.org to learn more about Homecoming Farm. This year’s theme is In response to the crises facing honey bees, bumble bees, native bees and other pollinators. We will spend a day together talking about pollinators and how we can protect them. In addition to lunch, the day’s events will include 

  • a presentation by entomologist Jody Gangloff-Kaufmann on “The Charming Garden Residents – Our Native Bees”;
  • a honey tasting led by Marina Marchese;
  • a discussion of Colony Collapse Disorder;
  •  a visit the hives at Homecoming Farm (weather permitting); and
  • a celebration of  the mystery and beauty of the bee and human relationship.
Jody Gangloff-Kaufmann

Gangloff-Kaufmann

Gangloff-Kaufmann is an entomologist with the NY State Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Program at Cornell University and a Homecoming Farm member. She specializes in pesticide reduction for urban and public health pests, and she serves as the IPM program’s pollinator specialist. She is a resident of Babylon; a backyard beekeeper; and an insect and outdoor enthusiast. She is the author of Wasp and Bee Management on Grapes and Wasp and Bee Management: A Common Sense Approach

Gangloff-Kaufmann’s presentation will take us into the beautiful world of bees who thrive in our Long Island gardens, their favorite plants, and nesting sites. You will become mindful of what it takes to protect our native backyard bees and help them to thrive.

MARINA MARCHESE

Marina Marchese

Marchese is the renowned  designer and beekeeper behind Red Bee Honey and co-author of The Honey Connoisseur: Selecting, Tasting, and Pairing Honey. She is a Member of the  Italian National Registry of Experts in the Sensory Analysis of Honey and the founder of The American Honey Tasting Society. She will be leading us in an amazing experience of tasting single varietal honeys and exploring  the world of the honey bee.  Her best selling memoir, Honeybee Lessons from an Accidental Beekeeper chronicles her journey into the world beekeeping.

Homecoming Farm is committed to the understanding that the human and natural world is one community of life.  We believe that as we care for the Earth, we care for ourselves, each other and future generations, while creating sustainable communities.  Beginning it’s 20th season, Homecoming Farm is one of the oldest NOFA NY LLC certified organic farms on Long Island.

In addition to its Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm, Homecoming donates 20% of what it grows and harvests to The Mary Brennan INN in Hempstead.  We offer educational programs throughout the year to schools, church groups and organizations interested in healthy living, organic growing, care of creation and mindful, peaceful living and welcome guests to our farm.
