The current issue of YES! is all about taking action to bring universal health care coverage to the U.S. A crucial way to do that is to send a message to our national leaders in the form of a vote.
Imagine if that message was lost through deceit and willful tampering with our ballots. Don’t think it can happen here? Greg Palast believes it already has. In his story in the Fall issue of YES! Palast describes how more than three million votes were not counted in the 2004 presidential election. Included in that count were enough “spoiled” votes in Ohio to change the outcome in that decisive state.
Activist groups across the country are following the Palast example to track down signs of election fraud. Even after this article appeared in YES!, we have seen voter actions that have stopped – for now – the destruction of paper ballots from the 2004 Ohio election. Others have stepped in to prevent the replacement of voting machines that produce a paper trail with electronic versions that can be easily be manipulated.
May your autumn be filled with hope and results. May your vote count,
