NY: Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act

Call now to ask for co-sponsorship of marriage and GENDA bills!

Now that the 2007 legislative session has begun in Albany , this is the time to call your Assemblymember and State Senator and ask them to co-sponsor two bills that are very important to the LGBT community but have never received a vote in either chamber of the New York State Legislature.

One of those bills is the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA), which makes it illegal to discriminate on the basis of gender identity and expression in areas like employment, housing and public accommodations. The other is legislation to allow same-sex couples to marry here in New York .

Both are expected to be introduced in early February, which is why we need you to call now. We need a record number of co-sponsors on both bills from the very first day they’re introduced to show real strength behind these two issues in 2007.

Whether your legislators are supporters or not, they need to hear from you that co-sponsorship of GENDA and marriage equality is important. The extra effort required to make a phone call is noticed by a legislator. Even if you end up talking to a receptionist, your call and request will be logged in and tallied.

Click here to use our new Action Center to make your calls. You’ll be walked through how to find the phone numbers you need, provided with a sample phone script, and given instructions on how to provide feedback to us about your calls.

These next few weeks can determine whether these bills will receive a vote in the New York State Assembly or Senate this legislative session, so make your calls now!

[Editor’s Note: Write to Governor Spitzer to end Marriage Discrimination. There is no law preventing Same-Sex couples from marrying in NY, only a Health Department regulation. Spitzer could end that in 5 minutes with an Executive Order.]
