Saturday April 12: The Eclectic Café presents Bill Carney’s Jug Addicts at the The Unitarian Universalist Society of South Suffolk 28 Brentwood Rd , Bay Shore , NY. Open mike 730pm, feature 830pm. Jug bands – an Americana original. More info at www.eclecticcafe.org or 631-661-1278. All proceeds to local charities.
Bill Carney’s Jug Addicts deliver a mix of early jazz standards, country and blues, alongside Memphis jug band classics. Twice the size of a traditional group, the Jug Addicts deliver power and drive that can only be created when ten or more musicians dig in and play hard, unable to hide the good time they’re having doing it. Even the jaded are apt to succumb to the enthusiasm and passion of the joyful noise created by Bill Carney’s Jug Addicts.
NYC’s most powerful jug band, the Jug Addicts were formed in 1997 out of the ashes of 2 prior jug bands, the Metropolecats and Pork Chop. Having started by blending NYC’s top 2 jug bands, the Jug Addicts continue the twinning principle by having 2 of every instrument, almost. The sound is raucous but with unexpectedly elegant touches and it makes you want to move your body.
Born in the late 20’s on the streets of Memphis, jug band music is a uniquely American form that blends jazz, blues, and popular music into an upbeat and infectious style. Familiar meets novelty, when guitar, fiddle and mandolin line up alongside washboard, kazoo and harmonica.
The Jug Addicts play monthly at Brooklyn’s Barbes and at the Rodeo Bar in Manhattan. They have played concerts and festivals for the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Museum of Modern Art, the Music for Montauk series, the Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture in Tarrytown, NY, and many others. The band performed recently on NBC’s Today show.
