It has been two weeks since Election Day and we are still glowing from the success of Peace Voters.
The November election results sent a clear message that Americans want a new direction in Iraq and in our own national leadership. Candidates such as Senators-elect James Webb (D-VA) and John Tester (D-MT) won crucial victories as peace candidates over pro-war incumbents. It was a stunning repudiation of Bush’s Iraq policy but our work is not done yet. The new Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has yet to put bringing the troops home from Iraq on her ‘First 100 hours Agenda’. Internal squabbles over the timing of a US withdrawal threaten to prevent a majority coalition and now US battleships are in place to launch an attack against Iran. Now more than ever, there is an immediate need to hold our new Congress accountable to the Peace Voters who elected them.
PRIORITY ACTIONS: Join VotersForPeace in reminding the new Congress that Peace Voters elected them– and why!
1. The most important action you can take now is to schedule a meeting with your Congressperson to tell them you want US troops out of Iraq. Use our link to find your member’s contact information, district totals of pledge signers, and a link to post your meeting on the VotersForPeace website.
2. Start a VotersForPeace pledge drive to add pressure to your Congressperson. Let them know you will continue organizing Peace Voters in their district until we are out of Iraq!
If you only have two minutes to get involved, please send an email to your members of Congress to let them know that you signed the VotersForPeace Pledge and you will continue to hold them accountable to the majority of Americans who want an end to the occupation of Iraq.
VotersForPeace is also launching a new round of post-election actions with Mandate For Peace, a coalition of dozens of peace organizations that are pushing the new Congress to carry out the will of the Peace Voters who elected them to office. Stay tuned for future updates!
Finally, we want to thank the hundreds of activists around the country who organized a peace visibility event around Election Day. Your work made a difference! Take a moment to enjoy the success, send us a note or photo of your event, and then get ready to kick your activism into high gear! If you have organizing tips or ideas that you want to share with other Peace Voters across the country, please join our yahoo listserve by sending an email to VotersForPeace-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
Thank you for your efforts– we look forward to hearing from you!
Sincerely,
Linda Schade
