Last month, Americans voted against politics as usual. They voted to stop the war in Iraq; they voted for an end to corrupt corporate lobbyists; they voted against the administration’s lack of action on global warming. Millions of people voted to bring our troops home and to impeach Bush! – thanks to statewide and municipal ballot initiatives. The Green Party made this happen.
The Green Party’s Peace Slate campaigned tirelessly. We were the only party calling for an end to the war and to bring our troops home now. Green candidates stood up to corporate power. Yes, we criticized the influence of big business lobbyists; but we backed up our talk by refusing corporate money. When Green Party candidates were allowed to debate we broadened the discussion and talked about real solutions to deficit spending, energy, healthcare and ending the war.
We elected 67 new Greens to office in 2006. We ran candidates in 38 states; and we were on the ballot in 31 states after starting the year with 17. The Green Party made a breakthrough in terms of debates, doing a great job when Greens were allowed to participate; and getting great press coverage when we were excluded. The Green Party received more votes than any other third party, in a year when third party or independent voter registration exceeded 25%. We accomplished a lot this year and intend to build on this in 2007.
Recently elected officials have a mandate for change. Will they live up to it?
The American public voted for change but will those newly elected do the right thing? Only the Green Party offers real change from politics as usual.
