Stop Bush’s Escalation in Iraq

In a speech to the nation tonight, President Bush is expected to call for an additional 20,000 troops to be sent to Iraq. This plan runs counter to the will of the American people, the recommendations of the Iraq Study Group, and the advice of almost every military expert with an opinion on the topic. We, the American people, need to stand up and put the brakes on this dangerous plan.

One Hit the Streets Tomorrow to Oppose Bush’s Escalation Tomorrow — Thursday, January 11th — ordinary Americans will gather together in events across the country to demonstrate opposition to the Bush plan. Let’s deliver an immediate and direct response to the president’s call for escalation: NO!

Events are springing up all over the country, but there’s always room for more. If you don’t see an event in your area, you can host your own; True Majority and the Win Without War Coalition will send you an event kit chock full of information, tips, and tools to make your event a success.

Two Tell Congress: Stop the Escalation and Bring Our Troops Home

Despite the President’s theories of unlimited presidential power, Congress has the authority — backed by historical precedent — to set limits on the president’s use of troops abroad. Indeed, in this case they have the moral duty to do so.

First, Congress should pass legislation just introduced by Senator Kennedy in the Senate that requires the President to get formal approval from Congress before committing additional troops to Iraq. Then, Congress needs to pass legislation mandating a phased withdrawal from Iraq, in keeping with the recommendations of the Iraq Study Group and the overwhelming wishes of the American people.

President Bush said it himself, a mere 18 months ago: “Sending more Americans would undermine our strategy of encouraging Iraqis to take the lead in this fight.” It seems strange to say, but we couldn’t agree with him more.
