Nuclear Waste Shipped Through Central New York

On May 22, Howie Hawkins, spokesperson from the Green Party, stated, “Reviving the dying nuclear industry by shipping wastes for reprocessing would be a destructive diversion of hundreds of billions of dollars from real answer to global warming and rising energy costs, which are energy efficiency and clean, renewable energy sources.” The DOE has estimated that in the next five years, the GNEP Program would cost $3 to $6 billion dollars. These numbers are expected to be extremely higher and could, “easily be more than $100 billion” (in 1996 dollars), according to the National Academies of Science.
