Just interesting…defining the Republican Party

P.S. AP reports that Barack Obama won the 2008 Democratic Primary in the Virgin Islands.

As I studied and blogged the primaries, my attention was brought to new regions, new web-sites, and new ways of thinking about politics.

As a Green Party member, third party advocate, and student of Ralph Nader’s ballot philosophy, I have often heard people say that the Republican Party began as a 3rd Party. And, I am sure that the irony of the fact that the Republican Party began in response to the pro-slavery position of other parties had crossed my mind and computer screen before.

Though, I was titillated to make the following discovery:

At the official and presumably non-partisan web-site of the Virgin Islands Board of Elections, the by-line under the Republican Party states, “The Republican Party was born in the early 1850’s by antislavery activists and individuals who believed……”.

In order for me to be multi-partisan, I will show you how the Virgin Island’s BOE lists the other parties on its web-site. Note: The Green Party of the United States does not currently have an affiliate in the Virgin Islands.

OUR POLITICAL PARTIES

“The Democratic Party has a long and proud history of representing and protecting the interests of working Americans……”

Independent Citizen Movement Party – The Party that CARES

“The Republican Party was born in the early 1850’s by antislavery activists and individuals who believed……”
