New web-site in town: Friends of Edgewood Preserve.
The Edgewood Preserve is in Deer Park, adjacent to the communities of Brentwood and Dix Hills. It is one of the biggest areas of open space in Western Suffolk. And, it is host to plant and animal species on the Endangered, Threatened, and/or Special Concern list.
There is a proposal from the NY State Department of Transportation to build a TRIM – Truck to Rail Intermodal Facility – near the preserve. The Friends of the Edgewood Preserve are trying to show the government the folly of such a big project, especially in such an important place.
Please go to their web-site to help with a letter writing campaign to the NY State Legislature.
And, consider visiting or volunteering at the Preserve.

Recently discovered the pine barrens. Last time I was on the site was as teenager exploring the buildings. Anyway first thing I noticed hiking around is does the state of NY ever come in to maintain the hiking trails with some trimming. It is an enjoyable walk but some trails are over grown and need to be reopened.
