NY Governor David Paterson acknowledges same-sex marriages

This is very positive news for New Yorkers who are LGBT. And, also, it is another commendable move made by New York Governor David Paterson. (Though, being the natural, born, critic that I am, I have to comment on another piece of the puzzle: Why didn’t former Democratic Governor Eliot Spitzer-whose stance was constantly defended by certain LGBT advocacy organizations-do this years ago, as Attorney General or Governor?)

Here is the news. From the Hartford Courant via the AP:

N.Y. Will Recognize Gay Marriage
Only Out-Of-State Ceremonies
Hartford Courant / Associated Press
May 29, 2008

ALBANY — – New York state will recognize gay marriages legally performed in other states and countries, according to a memo from the counsel to Gov. David Paterson, the governor’s spokeswoman said Wednesday.

State agencies, including those governing insurance and health care, must immediately recognize same-sex marriages legally performed elsewhere as valid in New York, according to the directive…

…the memo, based on a Feb. 1 New York Appellate Division court ruling, would recognize the marriages of New Yorkers who are legally wed elsewhere.
