Levy picks lesser-known official as chief deputy

Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy made a dark horse choice for his new chief deputy yesterday, reaching down into his real estate office to pick its director Christopher Kent to replace James Morgo who leaves March 31.
…the appointment took many in county government by surprise because Kent lacks the high-profile name of his predecessors, Morgo, former county lawmaker who once headed the Long Island Housing Partnership, and Kevin Law, who was partner in the prominent law firm Nixon Hargrave. “I had never heard the name [as a candidate], so it’s a surprise,” said Presiding Officer William Lindsay (D-Holbrook). “I wish him well.”
Some officials privately expressed concern Kent may lack the clout of earlier chief deputies to temper Levy’s more hardline positions. “Chris Kent is not Kevin Law and he’ll not be able to put the brakes on some of Steve’s poorer ideas,” said one GOP lawmaker who did not wish to be identified…
