Wed. July 11th: Zuccotti/Liberty Plaza is reoccupied

Crowd at Occupy Wall Street

Liberty Plaza/Zuccotti in October 2011

It is 10:39 pm Wednesday evening. There are big crowds, many people with suitcases, at Liberty Plaza/Zuccotti Park. Occupy Guitarmy has arrived on their trek from Philadelphia to NYC.

Around 6pm, the police made a sweep with arrests. It seems like there were two arrests, and one person, Mary, who was injured, maybe in the scuffle of arrest.

Info and Press Conference about: The EPA; Dioxin; Food Safety; and Public Health

The press release and information below is about the following event: “News Conference:  The Significance of the US EPA Oral Reference Dose for Dioxin to the Protection of Public Health” to be held in Albany today, Tuesday, July 10, 2012, 1:00 PM.

Dioxin in our air, and in our food supply (such as the milk we drink), can cause cancer and other harm to human beings. A group of scientists and environmental activists are trying to lobby government to solve some of the problem with better regulations and better public information campaigns. A way for people to limit their own dioxin exposure is to simply consume less animal fat.

for Dioxin to the Protection of Public Health

Tuesday, July 10, 2012, 1:00 PM

LCA Press Room, Legislative Office Building, Empire State Plaza, Albany, NY USA

(Presentations by Dr. Carpenter, Mr. Hassig and Ms. Warren will occur

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published “Reanalysis of
Key Issues Related to Dioxin Toxicity and Response to NAS Comments” in
February of 2012.  EPA sets forth a non-carcinogenic effects chronic
oral reference dose for dioxin in this document.  Those who consume
average quantities of animal fats receive dioxin exposures in excess
of the oral reference dose.

The purpose of this news conference is to explain the significance of
EPA’s non-carcinogenic effects oral reference dose to matters of
public health protection.  Dioxin exposures at current levels of food
supply contamination are damaging the health of those who consume
average quantities of animal fats.  Read more »

Wikileaks/Julain Assange update: Assange still in Ecuadorian Embassy in London

Julian Assange, from Wikileaks, at the SKUP co...

Julian Assange, Norway, March 2010 (see http://www.skup.no/Info_in_English) (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Review of what’s happening
: Julian Assange, an Australian citizen and a key player in the Wikileaks project, helped to publish previously confidential e-mails that embarrassed the United States military. While Assange was at the focus of political controversy, two women accused him sexual crimes, for which Sweden says he must answer. Assange, appearing suspicious of the timing of the charges and worried that it is a trick to get him deported to the US, is resisting extradition to Sweden. Assange is in England. The English Supreme Court ruled against him, and has set a date to deport him to Sweden. Assange fled to the embassy for Ecuador in London. CNN reports that Assange is probably still inside the embassy, awaiting an answer about if they will grant him political assylum.

Extradition deadline passes for WikiLeaks’ Assange

London (CNN) — A deadline for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to be extradited to Sweden for questioning in sexual assault allegations came and went Saturday with no apparent movement.

Assange is believed to still be inside the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, where he has been holed up since applying for political asylum on June 19. Read more »

Green Party: Despite the Supreme Court’s healthcare ruling, America needs Single Payer

Green Party of England and Wales

Green Party candidates and leaders said today that the Supreme Court’s ruling upholding the 2010 Affordable Care Act (ACA) should not distract Americans from the demand for real health care reform — Medicare For All.

Greens said that Medicare For All (single-payer national health care) will expand on the beneficial parts of the ACA and extend the guarantee of quality health care to every American, while solving its deficiencies, especially the unpopular individual mandate. Green Party members support expanded and improved Medicare For All, to include dental, vision, hearing, nutritional counseling, and proactive medicine, without co-pays, deductibles, and “doughnut holes.”

Medicare For All would cover all Americans, provide full choice of physician and hospital, and cut costs dramatically: current Medicare administrative overhead is only 3%, while for-profit health insurance administrative overhead is as high as 30%. The Green Party also supports efforts to enact statewide single-payer legislation in many states.

■ Ursula Rozum, Green candidate for the US House in Syracuse, in New York’s 24th District (http://www.ursulaforcongress.com):

“We must make health care a right for all Americans. Instead of making health care a right, President Obama and Congress confirmed the notion that expanded coverage is only worth pursuing if the profits of insurance companies, pharmaceutical manufacturers, and other health care corporations can be guaranteed. That’s why health insurance industry representatives were invited to help write the legislation. The Affordable Care Act will help many Americans — but millions will be left out in the cold. It is ultimately a victory for the idea that no reform is desirable without an assurance that corporate profits will be maintained or increased. The Green Party says that human needs must overrule corporate profits and that for-profit insurance companies must be removed from our health care system.”

A climate change disaster: More than 70 dead and 200,000 stranded in Bangladesh floods

Since climate change (global warming) is about a change over time, it is difficult to label single events as problems caused by climate change. Though, Bangladesh has been identified for many years as a place where climate change effects will cause harm. And, this latest round of flooding loss appears a profound example.

Current, 2012, news story referenced first. Then, background and video from previous years.

Seventy dead, 200,000 stranded in Bangladesh floods
(excerpt from) Reuters / June 27, 2012

(Reuters) – Days of rain in Bangladesh, some of the heaviest in years, have set off flash floods and landslides, killing at least 70 people and stranding about 200,000, police and officials said on Wednesday.

Low-lying and densely populated Bangladesh is battered by torrential downpours during the wet season, which began in the past few weeks…

Most of the deaths were caused by landslides, others by wall collapses, lightning strikes and surges of water. Army, police and fire brigade personnel were helping in rescue efforts…

Why You’ve Never Met A Man Named Shirley (A Book Review)

The full book review, and the answer to the “man named Shirley” question, is at Peace Couple: here.

(excerpt)

Book Review:
Shirley by Charlotte Bronte

1800's: Woman at desk

Charlotte Bronte’s novel Shirley is a must read for people interested in the topics of: economic justice; Occupy Wall Street ideas; women’s social history; feminism; war and peace; and charity. Bronte’s second published book, coming on the heels of the success of her Jane Eyre, is another masterpiece, full of drama and surprises, with some radical politics, and an extra heroine thrown into the mix.

Why haven’t many people heard of this book? [Read more at www.peacecouple.com]
