LAWRENCE HAYES, Thurs 3/9 Farmingdale

New Yorkers Against the Death Penalty, Long Island CHAPTER

Arrested at 19 for “acting in concert” to murder. Sentenced to death by an all-white jury. Former Black Panther member, NY Death Row inmate, and founder of the Campaign to End the Death Penalty…..

LAWRENCE HAYES

Speaks at SUNY Farmingdale THURSDAY MARCH 9, 11AM Free Admission. Directions below. New York has NOT abolished the death penalty. 2006 will be a year of great challenge and opportunity for those of us who are demanding an end to capital punishment.

We are facing serious obstacles: new judicial appointments that could overturn the de facto moratorium, pro-death legislators pushing their agendas forward…
Lest we forget about what it means for New York to have the death penalty…..

LAWRENCE HAYES experienced at the age of 19 New York’s Death Row firsthand, when he was arrested on trumphed-up charges in the murder of a police officer, although he himself was never accused of the actual killing. Sentenced by an all-white jury, this former member of the Black Panther Party who had worked to get drugs out of the African-American community thought execution was inevitable. Then, in 1972, his sentenced was commuted to life with parole due to the Supreme Court decision rendering the death penalty unconstitutional. Since this time, Lawrence has co-founded the Campaign Against the Death Penalty, and has spoken widely about capital punishment. He was featured in the Sundance Film Award-winning documentary “Deadline.”
