Malachy McCourt was born in Brooklyn, NY and from the age of three was raised in Limerick, Ireland. He left school at thirteen to begin work as a laborer. Malachy returned to the US at the age of twenty and again worked at manual tasks such as longshoreman, truck loader, and dishwasher, until he became an actor. His acting career has included Broadway, Off-Broadway and regional theatres, soap operas, film, and TV (including the HBO series “Oz”). He has been a radio host on several NY stations and is a popular TV talk show guest.
Malachy McCourt has been the recipient of several awards including the NYCLU Florina Lasker Civil Liberties Award and the Turning Point Inc. Humanitarian Award.
As well as being the co-author of the play A Couple of Blaguards with his brother Frank McCourt, Malachy has written his own New York Times bestselling memoir, A Monk Swimming. Malachy has published several other books and has had articles published in local and national peridodicals.
