The Sunnyland Jazz Band, headed up by banjo-ist Bob Barta, is an acoustic ensemble of musical preservationists, playing classic jazz, vintage rarities and vocal novelties. Bob also is featured on vocals, along with the band’s wailing trumpet player John Klumpp, while Jeff Furman provides support on old-fashioned tuba. This versatile group is well known for their spontaneity, unique sound and sense of humor, typified in their motto – “Never the same way once.”
A familiar staple at East End street fairs and festivals and at Le Chef in Southampton, the Sunnyland Jazz Band first organized over 20 years ago. The band’s sound, said Barta, is attributed to both material and personnel. “The material we play is the neglected tunes of Tin Pan Alley and New Orleans. We have a lot of lesser-known material, things recognized by jazz aficionados.”
The philosophy behind the band was to give a resurgent voice to some of the great performers of the early 20s and 30s, during the “heyday of jazz” before World War II. “There are not many places that play this kind of music anymore. Even the more mainstream parts of our catalogue – clubs in Manhattan have closed, musicians have passed away. We’re a little oasis out here.”
“…a great time, taking audiences along for a toe-tapping, hand-clapping ride” — Times/Review Newspapers
