Some Long Island shellfish beds closed

HUNTINGTON, N.Y. – Environmental officials have temporarily closed about 2,200 acres of Long Island shellfish harvest areas after a potentially lethal toxin was found in mussels.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation shut down the shellfishing beds Wednesday in Huntington Town waters.
The substance is called saxitoxin (sak-si-TAHK’-sin). It’s produced by a tiny marine organism.
People who eat shellfish where the poison has concentrated can become ill…
