Roy: Afghan War based on DoubleSpeak | Peace Couple

The Power of Nonviolence: Writings by Advocates of PeaceThe Arundhati Roy excerpt War is Peace is from her .from ‘s 2002 book Power Politics.  It form the twenty-second chapter in The Power of Nonviolence: Writings by Advocates of Peace. This essay continues the Post-Vietnam to the Present (1975-  ) section of the book.  Roy is an activist and Man Booker Prize winning author. Though, the preceding essays in this book all deal with timeless themes in supporting pacifism, this essay, which centers on the US invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, is the first essay in the book to feel that it is based on contemporary world politics.

Roy starts the essay with the gamification {the process of turning war into a video game] of the October 7, 2001 US-led attack on Afghanistan. The attack was done without seeking UN approval or even under color of international law.  Inverting the expected criticism against her comments, Roy makes clear that she does not take the side of any entity that chooses violence:

Newsday Censors the NY Green Party, Again

Newsday

For years Newsday has cut Green Party coverage out of articles.  They pretend our candidates,a our party, don’t exist.  And I am not talking about articles that just mention the 2 corporate parties.  I mean articles that are specifically about the smaller parties.  Take for instance this article by Dan Janison: Cross-endorsements loom for Cuomo, year after bid to change Wilson-Pakula.  The article discusses or a quotes a leader from the Democratic, Republican, Conservative Working Families and Independence Parties.  Only 1 New York State Ballot access party is not mentioned: Green Party.

Now I understand that it would be embarrassing to the other third parties to mention the Green Party.  You see, New York State requires a political party to receive 50,000 votes for their Governor candidate to remain a ballot access party.  Janison pretends in his article that the only way for a third party to obtain that many votes is to run one of the corporate Democratic/Republican governor candidates on their line, even if the candidate goes against what they stand for.  The case in point is made in the article that the anti-union Democratic Governor Cuomo ran last time on the Working Families line which pretends to be pro-union.  (This supposed conflict is not surprising since the Working Families Party has in the past pretended to be anti-fracking and anti-war, but only for a short enough time to get votes.)

The Green Party ruins all of this mythology.  The Green Party has been consistently pro-union, anti-fracking, and anti-war. (In fact the peace sign is the ballot symbol of the NY Green Party.)  And to top it all off, the Green Party has gotten 50,000 votes on its line by running its own candidate.

Let Janison know you expect better reporting by commenting on the article or tweeting him @Danjanison.

Pauling & Ikeda’s False Dilemma of Absolute Pacifism | PeaceCouple

The Power of Nonviolence: Writings by Advocates of PeaceThe second excerpt in The Power of Nonviolence: Writings by Advocates of Peace.from Linus Pauling & Daisaku Ikeda‘s 1992 book A Lifelong Quest for Peace forms the books twenty-first chapter. This dialogue continues the Post-Vietnam to the Present (1975-  ) section of the book.  In previous essay titled Immorality of War: Pauling & Ikeda, I discuss their credentials including Pauling’s Nobel Prizes both in Chemistry and Peace, along with Ikeda’s 1983  United Nations Peace Award.

This 3 1/2 page conversation does not make a cogent argument against absolute pacifism.  Both speakers make the obligatory reference to Hitler; discuss the difficulties of being a pacifist in a non-pacifist world; and determine that unsurprisingly that Einstein was not an absolute pacifist.  Paradoxically in an essay that argues against pacifism, they conclude with a discussion of how Japan has advanced quicker in economic and individual health due its not diverting national resources into a military economy.

The Hitler argument is that pacifism would be useless against the Nazis.  It is usually raised by those who are fearful of the concept of pacifism. I would not expect this argument from these authors or to be promoted by the editors of this collection.

Immorality of War: Pauling & Ikeda

The Power of Nonviolence: Writings by Advocates of PeaceThe excerpt from Linus Pauling & Daisaku Ikeda‘s 1992 book A Lifelong Quest for Peace is the twentieth chapter of The Power of Nonviolence: Writings by Advocates of Peace. This dialogue continues the Post-Vietnam to the Present (1975-  ) section of the book.  Linus Pauling — who died 2 years after co-authoring his book — was a  chemist, biochemist, pacifist, author, and teacher. Ikeda is the founder and current president of Sōka Gakkai International (SGI), an international lay Buddhist association which focuses on peace, cultural and educational activities.  He is the recipient of  the 1983  United Nations Peace Award and has written over 80 books.

In his amazing career, Pauling won the  1954 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and the 1962 Nobel Peace Prize. When he was awarded the Peace Prize the Nobel peace Prize committee issued the following statement:

Schell: Complete Disarmament is the Only Sane Path | Peace Couple

The Power of Nonviolence: Writings by Advocates of PeaceThe excerpt from Jonathan Schell‘s  1982 book The Fate of the Earth is the nineteenth chapter of The Power of Nonviolence: Writings by Advocates of Peace .  This dialogue continues the Post-Vietnam to the Present (1975-  ) section of the book.  The essay centers on Schell’s lifelong quest to abolish nuclear weapons.  The Fate of the Earth is based on a series of essays that Schell wrote for The New Yorker in the early 1980s.  It won the Los Angeles Times Book prize.

Sadly, despite the fall of the Soviet Union, Schell’s arguments for the only path to a safe world still hold.  He sees nuclear weapons as the greatest “predicament” that mankind has faced. With the benefit of current knowledge, I would argue that global climate change has overtaken nuclear weapons as humankind’s worst self-imposed threat.  Yet even at number two, the abolition of nuclear weapons must be accomplished for our survival.  I would also argue that the two are intertwined under former US President Eisenhower’s “military-industrial complex.”

Vintage Jewelry = Eco-Friendly + Fashion-Forward

Are you thinking about Valentine’s Day gifts? Or, about sparkling up your own winter wardrobe?

If so, please stop by our shop, Wilderside Jewelry, on Etsy.

Why did The Wilders open a vintage jewelry shop? We love the environment. And, choosing vintage or antique jewelry to wear and/or gift, is a way to be gentle on the planet. Remembering the Waste Hierarchy Triangle, folks who love the planet should always try to… ”Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”. Making sure to share or donate your own jewelry, and trying to buy vintage rather than new, is a way to help the environment.

We are excited to share some pretty brooches, necklaces, earrings, and other goodies at our new Etsy Shop. All of our items are previously worn. So, purchasing them supports the “reuse” principle. And, since they did not come from the local department store, many of them will be unique or one-of-a-kind when worn among your circle of friends! A great way to make a fashion statement. 20 CA Green Party Members Elected in 2013: Odd-Year Record

Twenty California Greens elected in 2013 – Record for an odd-numbered year

Renee Goddard

Renee Goddard

As a political party known for thinking globally and acting locally, seventeen California Green Party members were elected to local government on November 5th, bringing to 20 elected overall in 2013 (http://www.cagreens.org/elections/fall-2013). This is an all-time high for the party in an odd-numbered year (where there are fewer elections than in even-numbered years) – and it brings to 55 the number of California Green Party members currently holding public office statewide (http://www.cagreens.org/green-officeholders).

Since the founding of the Green Party of California in 1990, 293 California Green Party members have been elected to public office. The highest elected offices currently held by Greens in the state are Gayle McLaughlin (Mayor, Richmond) and Dan Hamburg (Supervisor, Mendocino County.)

All 11 Green incumbents were re-elected, led by Renee Goddard and John Reed in Fairfax, where Greens have had a Town Council majority since 2009, showing that Greens not only have good ideas, but can govern. Overall 68% of all Greens who ran on November 5th (17/25) and 69% in 2013 overall (20/29) were elected. The most from a single county were Humboldt (eight) and Marin (four).

Goddard said:

As a Green Party policy maker and community leader, the focus of my work on alternative transportation and leading Fairfax to reach our goal of Zero Waste by 2020, is grounded in making long term sustainable choices. My decisions and vision for Fairfax moving forward are rooted in green values which carefully consider the cost to the environment, and the welfare of the community as a whole.

Suffolk Green Party Supports Transgender Day of Remembrance

Green Party of SuffolkThe Green Party of Suffolk County announces our support of Transgender Day Of Remembrance, also known as TDOR, traditionally held on November 20th. We are announcing our support of this event both in its worldwide form, and its local events throughout Suffolk County.

TDOR is a worldwide event observed since 1999. The event is designed to raise awareness about the problems of discrimination, violence, and murder directed against transgender and gender-nonconforming people, and to commemorate the lives of transgender and gender-nonconforming people worldwide who have died from this kind of violence. As hate crimes are based on perpetrators’ prejudices rather than the identities of their targets, anyone who steps outside stereotypical gender expectations may be targeted for this kind of violence, whether or not they identify as transgender.

The other purpose of TDOR is solidarity, bringing together people from all parts of the transgender, gender and friends, and allies communities, to show that people are in solidarity against hate and violence, and in favor of community and freedom to express oneself.  Read more »
