TAKE ACTION!

The beverage giants and big supermarkets are pouring hundreds of thousands of dollars into beating the bigger better bottle bill , including waging a phony grassroots campaign by making their employees send in letters opposing the bill.

We can't afford the expensive tools that they have, so we have decided to "borrow" theirs!   The FoodIndustryAliance has set up a website where people can send their legislators e-mails opposing the bottle bill expansion.   We plan to flood the website and make it work for us, by changing the letter to SUPPORT expanding the bottle bill!

We have a limited window of time until they find out what we're up to and have to shut down the site.   Please take action now – and tell all your friends!

INSTRUCTIONS

1)      Go to http://foodaction.net/fia_actioncenter/oppose_more_bottlelaw.html

2)      Change subject heading

     Examples: Expand the bottle bill!

            Update the bottle law

            Support the bigger better bottle bill

3)      Delete text and replace with one of the following letters, or write your own

4)      Type in your name, e-mail and address and send

5)      The letter will be e-mailed to your state assemblymember and senator.   You also have the option of printing the letter and mailing it in.  If possible, you should do both.

6) You will receive an e-mail reply from the FoodIndustryAliance thanking you for taking action in opposition to the bottle law expansion.  Don't be surprised!

 

SAMPLE LETTERS

 

LETTER #1:  LITTER

I strongly support legislation to update New York's bottle bill.   Thanks to the bottle bill, we all have cleaner communities and less litter and broken glass in our playgrounds and parks. 

To me it makes no sense for a bottle of sparkling water to have a deposit and a bottle of plain water to not have a deposit.   If you look around, there are a lot more water bottles littering our streets than beer and soda bottles. 

I urge you to do the right thing and pass the Bigger Better Bottle Bill (A2517/S1290) this year.    Each year the legislature delays, more and more bottles and cans end up in the trash or polluting our neighborhoods.

LETTER #2: CONSUMER

I urge you to vote yes on the Bigger Better Bottle Bill this year.   This bill has been delayed in the legislature for too long.  It's time to do something about it!

The bottle bill is a little bit more work but it's a small thing we all can do to help our environment.   When I don't feel like taking my bottles back, I donate them to a charity or give them to someone who is collecting them.   Either way, they get recycled – and that's the most important thing.

Also it's good for my community, because if a piece of litter is worth 5 cents, someone will pick it up and return it.   So even if it costs more, it's worth it, because we all benefit from cleaner communities.

Please pass the Bigger Better Bottle Bill (A2517C/S1290C) now!

LETTER #3: STUDENT

I urge you to vote yes on the Bigger Better Bottle Bill (A.2517C/S.1290C) this year.   I know my fellow college students are diligent about returning the bottles and cans containing a five-cent deposit.  Unfortunately, it's harder to recycle non-deposit containers on campus, and instead they often wind up in the trash.   If water, sports drinks, iced tea and other non-carbonated beverages contained that same five-cent deposit, I know they would be recycled too!

Please support a clean campus community and pass the Bigger Better Bottle Bill now.

LETTER #4: RECYCLING

I am a strong supporter of recycling, which saves energy, natural resources, and landfill space.    My family and I recycle as much as we can, including taking bottles and cans back to the supermarket.

I don't understand why there is so much debate over expanding the bottle bill.    For 20 years the bottle bill has been our most effective recycling program.  This bill just updates the program to include bottled water and other drinks that are left out because they aren't carbonated.   Instead of being recycled, most of these containers end up in the garbage or litter.  This is a terrible waste.

Please pass the Bigger Better Bottle Bill (A2517C/S1290C) so we can have more recycling in New York State.
