Right now, the highest court in New York State has ONE ethnic minority judge. George Pataki soon might change this number to ZERO.With Judge Bundy Smith’s term coming to an end in September, there is an upcoming vacany in the NY State Court of Appeals. Judge Smith is currently the only ethnic minority serving on our State’s highest court.
Gov. Pataki will then appoint a judge from a list submitted by the Commission on Judicial nomination within three weeks. Judge Smith appears on this list. He is a respected member of the court who has asked that he continue to serve until 2007, when he will retire at the age of 70 as the law demands.
He is the ONLY ethnic minority on this list.
As leaders and activists concerned with equal justice, privileges, opportunities, and rights for all Americans, now is the time to put on the pressure.
Tell Pataki, Tell the media, Spread the Word:
ETHNIC MINORITIES SHOULD HAVE A VOICE ON THE HIGHEST COURT OF NEW YORK STATE. LET JUDGE SMITH CONTINUE TO SERVE.
